Deacons
The ministry of deacon as set forth in Scripture is one of compassion, witness, and service, sharing in the redeeming love of Jesus Christ for the poor, the hungry, the sick, the lost, the friendless, the oppressed, those burdened by unjust policies or structures, or anyone in distress. (G-2.0201, The Book of Order)
At First Presbyterian, the Deacons visit shut-ins, the sick and the grieving. They also give a monthly contribution to both Community Services and The Salvation Army to provide food and other forms of aid to the poor in Venango County. Among the other responsibilities of the board are a flower and card ministry.

Praise God: Mitten Tree and Giving Tree 2014
Martha and Virginia had the heartwarming pleasure of removing the items from the Mitten Tree and delivering them to Community Services facility in Rocky Grove. There were so many hats, mittens, gloves, scarves and socks on the tree we felt led to count them. You will be amazed to learn that our church family gave more than 125 items.
Praise God for the many blessing that allow us to help others at Christmas time and throughout the year. The generosity of this congregation was seen with our giving tree as well. There were 45 tags on the tree and all were taken to purchase gifts. Thanks to all who have made this Christmas special for children here in Franklin. |
Deacons (and Session) Do Annual Toy Gift Exchange
Each year, our Board of Deacons and Session have their Christmas Party/Meeting at the manse. For these events, we draw names for the gift exchange. But rather than buy each other a gift, we purchase a toy for a child that reflects the personality of the deacon or elder whose name we've drawn. When the gift is opened, we try to guess why/how that particular toy reflects the person who opened it. It is a lot of fun and laughs...and we have 18 or more toys to donate for needy children.
Below are the pictures of the Deacon gift exchange. (Sorry, but we forgot to take pics of the Elders)
