What We Believe

Presbyterians are a diverse group of people who come together with a variety of theological beliefs. Jesus Christ calls us together and unites us in his love and grace, across our differences. In Christ we worship, study, seek reconciliation, serve and give to the glory of God's Kingdom. What we believe is stated clearly, and lengthily in part one of our constitution, the Book of Confessions (www.pcusa.org/site_media/media/uploads/oga/pdf/boc2016.pdf).  Our confessions of faith go back to the early church and cover a wide range of theological topics. If we had to choose one confession of core beliefs at First Presbyterian, it would be found in the ancient profession of faith, the Apostles' Creed.
The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ His only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, and sits on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from there He shall come to judge the living and the dead.  I believe in the Holy Spirit; the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting.  Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer (recited during our worship service)

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name.  Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.  Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever.  Amen

Our Presbyterian Beliefs

Along with our Book of Confessions (www.pcusa.org/site_media/media/uploads/oga/pdf/boc2016.pdf), part two of our constitution is the Book of Order (oga.pcusa.org/site_media/media/uploads/oga/pdf/book-of-order2017-electronic_updated110117.pdf ).  It is a document that orders our life together as we relate to one another across diverse congregations. It is what guides us in doing things, "decently and in order."  In the book, many of our theological beliefs are stated. If you want to learn more, clink on the links above to open a .pdf file on each book.  Or you may join our Stated Clerk, Gradye Parsons, as he explores the the Book of Order in a series of videos found below:
